In memory of Peggy Santo
I'm getting a little bit personal today for a good cause. My friend Erin asked me if I would participate in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer with her. It's on May 31st and we basically walk 39 miles over two days. The reason this is so close to home for her is because her husband, Rodd, lost his mother last year to cancer. I thought I would share her story.
Her maiden name is Peggy Sullivan, though Rodd's dad nicknamed her Solomon, which was believed to be a play on her maiden name. So, it was only appropriate that for her 50th birthday, the license plate on her new BMW convertible be customized to say "4SOLOMON."
She was a real estate broker who was not only good at what she did, but she *loved* what she did, too. She also loved their house in the Hamptons, where they basically spent their summers. But it wasn't just to rest and relax, more weekends than not, they had visitors, and she was known to be a gracious host. She came from a big family - survived by her 6 sisters.
In early May of 2013, she went in for an MRI because she was having back pain. That's when they discovered she had stage 4 breast cancer that had metastasized to her back/spine. Her bottom 3 vertebrae were gone. She started radiation and chemo treatments, but did not make it too far along. The pain was so intense at this point that they had to keep giving her so much pain medicine, which in turn ended up shutting down her whole body. She passed away on June 23rd, roughly 7-8 weeks after that first MRI scan.
I know we all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, or really just cancer in general. This is in memory of all of our loved ones. I'm not only walking for Peggy, I'm walking for everyone I love, and everyone my loved ones have loved that we have lost. As part of our participation in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, we are required to raise $1,800 per person on our team. So collectively, our team needs to raise $5400. And that's where I want to use my blog and shopping addiction for good.
I've set up a fundraising sale page directly on my blog - you can find this here. I'm not asking you to paypal me, I'm asking you to choose the item you like and make the donation directly on our team's page here. We'll even pay for your shipping costs as our thank you! And if you feel generous enough to simply donate without shopping - that's fine, too! We appreciate anything and everything you can give. Thanks for letting me share this here.
