The Tip Jar Analogy

I leave so many comments on blogs, but I almost never go back to see if I've been responded to. And when I reply to the comments on my own blog, it definitely can be time consuming because not only do I reply, I also make sure to check out the commenters' blogs as well. The time consuming part doesn't even bother me because I enjoy it and I think it's well worth my time. However, I don't like when it's counter-productive and a one-sided conversation because the other person has no idea I've even said anything to them. Kind of like that Seinfeld episode where George keeps putting money in the tip jar, but none of the employees physically see him do it, so for all they know, he's not even tipping them.

It took me a good six months to realize that when I received that email notification of a new comment, I could simply reply to that email as if the commenter personally emailed me in the first place. My reply goes directly to their email inbox, not back into Blogger cyberspace, so I know that my response will be read. How cool is that? Very cool! BUT this technique only works if you are NOT a "no-reply blogger."

But how do I know if I'm a no-reply blogger?

If you just asked yourself that question, then the answer is yes. Yes, you're more than likely one of those no-reply bloggers. Rather than recreate a whole tutorial about this, I thought I'd share a couple I came across that were very helpful.

For all you black and white, strictly business type of folk - click here.

For all you fun, outgoing, lighthearted peeps - click here.

Better yet, how about you just read them both, take notes cross referencing their similarities, then once your profile is updated, leave me a comment, and let's have an enlightening conversation via email about your learnings. Doesn't that sound fun? I thought so.

You're welcome. :)

  1. This is why I installed Disqus on my blog. I never click "email me" when I comment, lol.

  2. Thanks for the links and lesson! It looks like I'm not a no-reply blogger, but that must have been the default when I signed up because I wasn't savvy enough to think of that on my own.
