Five

Good morning and happy Monday! So sorry for the inadvertent radio silence last week. Last Saturday, I woke up with a cough and a sore throat and it really knocked me out! I was in bed for three days, missed work on Monday, and slowly started coming back to life the rest of the week just to be hit with an awful migraine on Friday, which put me in bed once again for a good 15 hours. Sometimes life just tells you to slow your roll regardless of what is on your calendar. I am feeling better, thankfully, but still trying to take it easy and not push myself. I haven't worked out in almost two weeks and that in and of itself gives me anxiety. Not because I feel like I'm gaining weight, but because working out is my stress reliever! Anyhoo, thanks to everyone who checked in on me to make sure I was still breathing!

rewardStyle Conference Schedule + What I Wore

As the days started getting freakishly close to the rewardStyle conference, I started to panic because I had no idea what the schedule was going to be like which would ultimately dictate what I was going to pack. I knew the conference was Thursday to Saturday, but was Thursday really just a travel day, or did I actually have to plan to fly in Wednesday evening? In addition, I have a high school friend I wanted to visit with in Dallas while I was there, but didn't know if I could sneak away for lunch, or just plan to meet after the conference on Sunday before I flew out. We had received an email with all of the night time events, and I knew there were classes involved, but there were no time slots associated with the events. I know you're probably overdosing on all the #rStheCon recaps, but I thought it would be helpful to understand how the days flowed in case you're like me and missed the memo that there was a website dedicated for the conference attendees that included the hourly schedule. Oops! If you missed Monday's post about what I learned at the conference, you can refer back to it here. Otherwise, let's get started on the outfits and agenda!

Is the rewardStyle conference worth it?

Is the rewardStyle conference worth it? I know that's what everyone is thinking even though only a handful of people have actually come out and asked me that question direct. I've been sharing my candid comments and observations about the conference all weekend on Snapchat, but I definitely wanted to recap everything on the blog as well since I know the majority of my readers don't follow me on that platform. Plus, it's helpful for me to document this info while it's fresh in my mind and I'm able to refer back to it later. This is basically my online diary after all! In this post I wanted to not only provide an answer to the title of this post but also share highlights of things I learned or wish I knew before attending myself. Let's get started!

2016 blooper reel

This week is all about looking back on 2016! The good, the bad, and the awkward! You can see a roundup of my favorite outfits in Monday's post here. Today, I wanted to share with you all the reasons why fashion blogging is HARD. Ok, it's not really. But it is. Dressing up for no reason,  arguing with convincing the husband to take your photos, trying to decide on the photo location,  changing in the back seat of your car (I challenge you to put on a pair of Spanx leggings in the backseat of a sedan!!!), working around the sun's schedule, and don't *even* get me started on the wind!

1000

Original post here

Last Friday marked my 1000th post on the blog. One freaking thousand! That is crazy town! I wanted to make sure I acknowledged the milestone because that just seems like a lot. Plus, I feel like my blog has evolved quite a bit over the last one thousand posts, so today will be a fun walk down memory lane! This photo above was basically how it all started. I used a tripod along with a timer app on my phone to take these outfit photos every morning before work. It was kind of a pain in the butt because I had to walk to the phone and reset the timer in between shots. But alas, I made it happen.

#FoundAtSimon

In one of my posts last week, I mentioned a fun blogger/shopping event at the St. Louis Premium Outlets hosted by Psyche from Economy of Style. I was looking forward to it all week! Not that work is crazy, but ok, maybe it's been a bit crazy the last few weeks and I can never turn down a good retail therapy session! When she invited me, I was certain I would have a schedule conflict because we have been so busy this summer. Miraculously, the moons aligned and I was able to attend! I wanted to recap the event for you today because I will be sharing a couple of my purchases in outfits throughout the week!

My yoga and style event recap

The yoga and style event that I hosted at Yoga Six happened on July 16th! Finally! I say "finally" only because I was so nervous and anxious about the event. It was the first ever blogger event that I've had to host on my own (aka without Jenna), so the planning, inviting, planning, and inviting have been my biggest priorities over the last few weeks. So how did this event come to pass in the first place? Well, I've mentioned Yoga Six on the blog a few times now. In April, they asked if I would be a community ambassador for them, which consisted of me being able to practice at the studios for free in exchange for me bringing a friend to class every other week, posting periodically on social media, and then ultimately hosting a workshop.

When it came down to planning a theme for a workshop, I was at a loss! I still consider myself fairly new to Yoga, so I certainly didn't want to paint myself as some expert. I wanted a theme that felt like "me" and the idea I came up with was a style event. Specifically, providing attendees style inspiration for taking their workout outfits from yoga to real life. I was thrilled that Laura with The Fashion Lane agreed to bring her truck to the event so that people could shop after their workout. Ok, so that was all fine and dandy, but now what to do about refreshments?!

Container Store baking cups used for hummus/carrots

Naturally I wanted to keep the menu super light and generally health conscious since this was fitness related after all. I loved the idea of having pre-portioned little cups of hummus with carrots as dippers. Super easy, and it provided for a nice pop of color. I just bought some regular and garlic hummus from Trader Joe's. Highly recommend.

As much as I would have loved to have alcohol at this event, it didn't seem appropriate. But then what do people drink at events if there is no alcohol? I decided to take a stab at making some fruit infused water. I experimented with recipes the weekend before so I could figure out what my favorites were and determine how much in advance I needed to make it to achieve the most flavor. My taste test after 24 hours of infusing did not seem long enough to me, so I made these on Thursday evening for the Saturday afternoon event.

I made (2) carafes each of (3) different flavors: 1- mango and cantaloupe, 2- cucumber and mint, and 3- pineapple, strawberries, and blueberries. Each carafe was one liter. My sister in law asked what recipes I used, and I really didn't use any. I got ideas for fruit pairings from Pinterest and also asked a few friends what their favorites were, but otherwise just filled 1/3 of the carafe with fruit and the rest with water. I did add (2) packets of sweetener to each carafe to help bring out the flavor a little better. All of the fruit I purchased from Trader Joe's. I found their fruit was juicier than my neighborhood grocery store.

If you've seen photos from any family birthday, you know that we always have cookies at our events. I thought it would be adorable to have cookies here, too, and when I saw this pin on Pinterest, I forwarded it to our cookie guru and she was totally willing and able to replicate them. She lives nearby and just bakes them out of her home! If you're local to the Metro East St. Louis area (aka the Illinois side of the river) and are interested, let me know and I can hook you up with her!

I wanted to keep the colors bright, and especially centered around the color orange and I figured that greens and yellows would be the perfect complements. Luckily, I had a couple serving dishes that would be perfect for this. I just had to borrow a couple of large platters and the ice tubs from my mother in law, and then I went to a local party store to pick up the cups, plates, napkins, and tablecloth.

For the other snacks, I bought some of Trader Joe's Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt dip to serve alongside various crackers, toasts, or more carrots! Fruit is so pretty on its own, so I cut up some seedless watermelon and dressed it with some cantaloupe, grapes, and blueberries.

A couple of things I missed - I totally forgot to get photos of the gift table which bums me out! I had 10 gifts to giveaway, and I'm sad I didn't get to document that! Every person that attended was entered to win one of the prizes. The event was only an hour and a half, an hour of that being yoga! That only left thirty minutes for people to eat and shop, and I didn't want to waste everyone's time while they watched me draw names. So, while everyone was getting their yoga on, I had the girls at Yoga Six draw the names so I could label each prize with the winner and have them ready to hand out once class was over.

The other thing I missed was that I never got a photo of the Fashion Lane Truck parked in front of the studio!!! Ugh, such a missed opportunity. But this is why you need people 100% not involved in the event assigned to take photos! The husband was helping me get people signed in and such, so I know his head was spinning. Originally, I had only wanted him to take photos, but he certainly did a lot more than that! Oh well, lesson learned!

Speaking of photos, the husband attempted to take action photos of the crowd, but I'm most certain that anyone in those photos will kill me if I posted them. Eating is generally not a good action to be doing while being photographed. Nor is talking. So I will spare people that mortification and share this weird shot of my face as I'm talking about these handouts I did for the event.

Read more about these flat lays HERE

Again, since time was limited, I really didn't have time to do a formal presentation or style session. But I still wanted to deliver on my promise of making this an actual "style" event so I thought the best compromise was to put together this flyer with exclusive content along with a link to read more on a hidden page of my blog. I didn't want to shove this in people's faces as they were trying to check in and get settled into class, so I simply put one in each of the gift bags and left a stack of them on the table for people to grab at their leisure. I then followed up with a thank you email to everyone that attended and attached a PDF file of the handout to ensure everyone had the opportunity to see it in one way or the other!

Carrie was the first one to arrive at the event, so she was lucky enough to get the one posed photo I took of the entire event. She wasn't able to stay for yoga (hence her adorable outfit) but she came to mingle and shop and it was so nice to finally meet her in person!

Whew!! It was nice to see this all come together! I ended up having 30 people show up for the event, which absolutely excites me! I was thinking I would be lucky if 10-15 people showed up, so I was very overwhelmed by the support! If I could do it again, I wouldn't have put the start time of the event the same time as class was starting. I would have started the event about a half hour or so before class, and then kept the half hour after class making it 2 hours total. And like I said, I shouldn't have had the husband helping me do stuff in addition to taking the photos. Like a wedding, I should have made a checklist of photos I wanted and included a group photo of the whole crowd - perhaps in the actual studio.

My ambassador time with Yoga Six has officially ended, but if it tells you how much I truly do love the studio, I just purchased a block of classes because I definitely want to continue to practice there, whether I have to pay or not! It's challenging and exciting and I burn a ridiculous amount of calories, so I don't want to see all that come to an end! I would still love to meet you for class one day if you are local! Just let me know!!

Thanks for reading this if you've gotten to the end! And a special shout out to a few of the local bloggers that attended the event: Jenna, Psyche, Olivia, Jeanne and Emily (who are 2/3 of Fashion by Committee)!

Top view outfit selfies: Tips and tricks

Instagram top view outfit selfie how to

I have a little bit of a treat for you today! Almost two years ago, I put together this Instagram selfie how-to post and I've been meaning to update it because my techniques have evolved since then. I've had a few questions about how I take mine, so I figured that I would not only share some tips with you, but show you photographic comparisons to hopefully help illustrate why I do what I do! Let's get started!

Three

Sunnies: Gucci | Jacket: J.Crew | Necklace: Kendra Scott (c/o) | Rings: Kendra Scott | Camera Bag: Lo&Sons | Top: bp. | Bottoms: Express | Booties: Dolce Vita

Today is a little bit special on the blog. I'm celebrating my three year blogiversary! It was technically on Saturday, but I figured I would make today the official celebration! For year one, I had a photographer friend take photos of me re-wearing some of my favorite outfits from that first year. For year two, I wore all of my most favorite and special pieces. I was once again stumped with what to do for year three. I decided to do what I've been doing best this year and style some basics, throw on an amazing jacket, and find an interesting photo spot!

The best of 2015

Well, this is my last post for 2015! I figure I will take the rest of the week "off" from blogging to enjoy the holiday and recharge for a bigger and better 2016! Last year I did an end-of-the-year recap, which I very much enjoyed, so I decided to put together another one for you! I've picked a favorite outfit for every month. Let me know if your favorite made the cut!

My Instagram hashtags

Instagram handle: carylee07

This is a little bit of a random post, but I've been wanting to touch on this for some time, but  wasn't really sure how to communicate it! With things getting a little crazy around here for December, I figured this was a nice easy, breezy post to help close out the week. So, what is this all about? Well, if you look at my Instagram account, at first glance, it appears to be a hodgepodge of randomness. I love the look of a consistent, organized feed, but I don't just want to provide one type of content because I like sharing my outfits in different formats. One night I decided to create my own hashtags for the main buckets of photo types I share most regularly. It makes the OCD part of me very happy to see each photo type mingle nice and happily with its peers. And today I wanted to share those hashtags with you!

Building your fall wardrobe: Revamped!

I always consider my first year of blogging very similar to my middle school years - extremely awkward and uncomfortable to look at. But there is one post I put together during those first few months that I felt needed to be republished and revamped. Reading through this again, I was actually quite impressed with how thoughtful and thorough this post was and how relevant the pieces I picked out still were! So, I'm sharing this again but updating it with some links to current pieces. I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane and maybe find inspiration you missed the first time around!
The 30 pieces:
All items linked below are similar unless otherwise noted
Bottom Row L to R: Moto jacket | Denim jacket | Blazer | Basic pump | Flats (options here and here) | Riding boots (love these Frye boots HERE) | Carry All bag: Shop Rebecca Minkoff totes HERE, affordable and reversible option HERE | Cross body bag (colorful and classic options HERE)

Someone asked me how to build your wardrobe from scratch, and that question has inspired this entire post. I didn't feel like it could be answered in a few sentences, without any visual references, so I decided to just capture everything in a post and hope that others find this helpful as well. It's obviously hard to build your closet for ALL seasons all at once - especially since you're limited to what is currently sold in the stores. Therefore, I decided to make this fall focused and plan to do a spring version, too. So, let's get started!

1. Identify yourself. First and foremost, I think it's important to try and identify what your own style is  - preppy, funky, boho, classic, etc. For me it's hard to describe my own personal style in just a few words, but I know that I love patterns, bright colors, and I'm not afraid to take risks. In my "About Me" section, I describe this as  feminine bold classic glam. If you're unsure, try sifting through magazines or Pinterest - gather images of outfits and pieces you like and figure out what the common theme is with everything. As you shop, keep this common theme in mind - it will help narrow your focus.

2. Be aware of your body type. If you've ever watched What Not to Wear, you'll know that Stacy and Clinton always preach about faking an hourglass figure, and that you should dress around the biggest part of your body. Basically, it's all about balance. Do you have big hips but a small chest? Look for pieces that have volume up top to balance out your bottom half. I'm square shaped with no real defined waist. Therefore, I love the silhouette of skater skirts because it gives the illusion that my waist is the smallest part of my body.

3. Don't worry about trends. Trends aren't for everyone. It doesn't matter if everyone else is wearing Uggs and leggings as pants. You don't have to dress that way. Trends can definitely, and should definitely, influence how you dress, but you shouldn't wear something just because everyone else does or because everyone else doesn't for that matter. If you like it, and it fits you properly, then wear it.

4. Start with remixable basics. If you're literally starting from scratch, it's not cheap to buy new things. Your money will go a lot farther if you focus on basics that are easy enough to mix and match. A friend once said that she won't buy something unless she can think of 3 different ways she can wear it. That's absolutely great advice.

5. Don't forget about accessories.  If you build a good base, your accessories can do a lot more for your outfit than you realize. Jewelry, scarves, shoes - use these pieces for your pops of fun. They'll also help keep you from getting bored with your closet.

OK, so that all sounds good in theory, but where do you even start? A few of my friends are doing a 30 x 30 challenge. They pick 30 pieces in their wardrobe to create 30 different outfits - one for every day in November. I didn't end up participating because I didn't have time to really prep for this, but this post is now my way of playing along. If I had to completely start over, these are the types of pieces I would pick.

(4) tops: I can't live without my chambray. Outside of that, I picked one color and one print, and then a cami for modesty.
(3) sweaters: A fitted cardigan, a slouchy cardigan, and a pullover sweater
(2) dresses: One LBD and you know I can't live without my stripes. I picked styles that could stand strong on its own, or work well with layers.
(2) skirts: Two classic silhouettes - skater (or A line) and pencil
(4) pants: Jeans, khakis, colored, leggings
(3) jackets: Moto, denim, blazer
(3) pairs of shoes: Boots, flats, pumps
(2) scarves: printed but still good neutrals
(2) necklaces: one long and one short
(2) pairs of earrings: studs and drop
(1) set of bangles - which could be worn alone, in a pair, or all 3 together
(2) bags: one larger carryall and one smaller crossbody

Alright - I will be honest and tell you that I didn't know if I could make it to 30. It was a pretty long process, but as you can see, it can be done. Just think of the possibilities had I NOT included accessories or shoes in this 30!

That's all great, but now where do you shop? Anywhere and everywhere! I'd hold off on online shopping until you understand what brands and designers you like and you know exactly what sizes you are in these brands. Otherwise, you'll get frustrated pretty quickly ordering online just for it to arrive a week later and not fit you. For work pieces, you can find these at places like Target, J Crew Factory, NY&Co, Express, Banana Republic. For trendier pieces, you can try Forever 21, Express, and H&M. Department stores are always great, too, my favorites are Nordstrom and Dillard's. Discount places like TJ Maxx, Marshall's, and Ross are great, too, as long as you are patient and are prepared to dig.

Lots of information, but I hope it's all useful whether you are rebuilding your wardrobe or simply just trying to figure out where you have holes in your closet for the fall. If you have any tips or rules that you live by, I'd love to hear them also! Ultimately your closet is an evolution of constant inspiration!

Two

I totally stole this idea from Erica. Layering my sleeveless trench over a moto jacket? Colorblocking genius, I tell ya! I absolutely love how this reads as simply one coat - when the husband was taking my photos, he happened to see the zipper from my moto jacket peeking out, and  he asked confusedly, "Are you wearing two coats?" Ah, fooled him! Almost!  So glad that I learned this little trick! All of a sudden, I have even more use out of this trench!

Sunnies: Tom Ford | Earrings: Express | Necklace: Chanel | Bag: Chanel "Istanbul" tote (other color here, budget option) | Dress: DVF (wrap dress options here and here) | Moto Jacket: Express | Sleeveless trench: Ann Taylor (option, option)  | Booties: Christian Louboutin (option, budget option)

So, I'm taking a little break today from the #RemixFix2015 challenge to celebrate my TWO YEAR blog anniversary! Two years, guys! That's just crazy talk! My anniversary was actually on Friday, the 23rd, but I wanted to celebrate on a Manic Monday because I feel like all of you have helped mold my blog to what it is today.

Last year, I celebrated by doing a Throwback Thursday post where I re-wore some of my favorite and most popular outfits from my first year. I kept hemming and hawing about what to do for year 2. A big tulle skirt, ginormous balloons, and cupcakes sounded fun for a photo shoot, but, that's not me, and I was afraid the whole post would feel too contrived. OK, cupcakes are me. I love cupcakes.

Instead, I decided to grab some of my most special pieces in my closet room and wear them all at the same time! Even though these pieces are not in my capsule, I'm still playing by the rules somewhat by shopping my closet vs. trying to purchase the perfect anniversary outfit brand new.

I love mixing some of my more designer items with "regular," more every day pieces, and this outfit is the perfect example of that along with a few other things that are pretty typical of my style - color pop, bold print, and layers for added interest. I couldn't think of a better way to commemorate this milestone than by highlighting some favorite pieces that I intend to have for years to come despite the many trends that will come and go from now until then!

Thank you for carrying me to year two. It's still rainbows and unicorns to me (for the most part, heh), and I look forward to what year 3 has in store!

Flat lays: Random roundup and how to

Happy New Year!!

My random roundup is just a little bit different today. I've found that the same outfits are received differently depending on how they are showcased-- a proper photograph, a mirrored selfie, a top down or "from where I stand" selfie, or a flat lay. I feel like it has something to do with not only the composition or quality of the photo itself, but also the reader's/viewer's ability to relate their own personality or lifestyle to the person who is wearing the clothes.

Flat lays are one of my favorite ways to showcase outfits because I feel like they are the least personal. There's no physical person (i.e. body type, age, personality, etc.) attached to these clothes, so the outfits can speak for themselves, and in theory, be universally relatable. I decided to grab some familiar outfits, but share them on the blog in the form of their flat lays.
Full outfit here
Vest: JCrew | Necklace: Kate Spade | Bag: Forever 21 | Sweater: Express (option, option) | Top: Rubbish (option, option) | Bracelet: Nadri | Bottoms: Express (option, option) | Shoes: Joe's (50% off!)

Blazer: Express | Top: Express | Necklace: Express | Bottoms: Express | Shoes: Tory Burch

Full outfit here
Necklace: Stella and Dot | Scarf worn as a shawl: Zara | Bag: Chicastic | Top: LOFT (other colors here) | Bottoms: Express | Boots: Coach

Full outfit here
Jacket: Pulse | Scarf: H&M | Top: LOFT | Bottoms: Express (option, option) | Booties: Hinge (option)

Coat: Wilson's Leather | Necklace: Kate Spade | Dress: c/o Boohoo (in grape) | Gloves: Target/Neiman Marcus Collaboration | Heels: Kate Spade

Flat lays are something that I've started to get into - they're a lot of fun to put together, and I always enjoy seeing others on Instagram and Pinterest. Jenna is really great about doing these, so the first time we met up, that was one of the first questions I asked her -- how do you do your flat lays? Lucky for you - she put together a whole post about it, which is awesome! See it here - needless to say, I pinned it right away, and I've been Pinspired to do my own ever since.

Her tutorial is already pretty thorough, so I'll only touch on my own personal nuances. I use a few things - I have a 24x36 sheet of white foam board, a 36x48 white, trifold presentation board, and a light box (very similar to this one.) I switch my background depending on how big my subject matter is.

I posted the above on Instagram last weekend here. It definitely looks a lot less glamorous to get to that point. I normally like to take these photos near a window with natural light, but I think I was just antsy to take one after being flat lay-less in California all week, so I was too impatient to wait for morning. While the background I used was my trifold presentation board, I did use my spotlights and rigged my lightbox a bit so I could diffuse the light.

Light box - very similar to this one

And this is where the magic happens. I play around with the composition until I find something that looks "right" to me. And then I take about 1278676 photos, keep the best one and delete the rest.

And this is the raw photo I took using my iPhone 6 camera. With a little photo editing using the same apps Jenna mentioned in her post, I was able to brighten this up a bit and eliminate the line of my photo box wall.

Bracelets: H&M (Gifted) | Necklace: Stella and Dot (Gifted) | Polish: Essie "Penny Talk" (Gifted) | Gloss: Chanel "174 Daydream" | Heels: MICHAEL Michael Kors (similar) | SKIRT: Express (option, option)

The end result is what you see on Instagram. Yes, I'm crazy, as I'm sure this is way more effort than someone should do for an Instagram photo, but it's FUN and therapeutic, just trust me on this!

Anyway, I thought this would be a good way to end the short week! Hope you enjoyed this for one reason or another, and if anything, I hope I inspired you to play around with your own flat lays and photo projects!
