Friday Remix: The striped flat

halogen ava pointy toe flat

I am obsessed with stripes. OBSESSED with them. If you've been following my blog for awhile now, that's just a given. Stripes are a neutral and they go with all the things! It's my favorite pattern with which to print mix! For some reason, styling striped shoes doesn't come as easy to me, and I'm not sure why! I think it's all about balance. Sometimes I feel like an outfit can look too top heavy because the stripes don't ground the outfit as much as a solid shoe would. Or maybe it's because they're such attention grabbers that your eyes go directly to your feet, but in a way that truncates your look verses elongates your legs. Whatever the reason is, I figure I can't be alone in this struggle, so I wanted to pull together some of the looks that I thought worked very well with the striped flats so now this can be your striped shoe resource for color and outfit pairings!

Black blazer, bright top, jeans, black and white striped flats
Outfit formula: Black blazer, bright top, medium washed jeans, black and white striped flats

I feel like the easiest way to make these flats work is to pair it with something black on top. The black in the flats and the black in the blazer bookend this outfit nicely. The bright pink is interesting enough to keep your eyes up top, and not automatically focused on your shoes. Not that staring at your shoes is a bad thing! It's a good thing - I love good looking shoes! I'm specifically just referring to proportion and balance.

There's no easier way to balance the black and white flats than by pairing it with a black and white top. I love the lace details in this cami - it provides for a subtle print mix with the stripes so it's not super matchy matchy.

I really loved the way the stripes on stripes look ended up turning out. And part of the reason why I felt this worked well is because I kept everything pretty monochromatic. Yes, there are pops of white in here, obviously, and then I ended up adding a jacket for warmth, but the small stripes and large stripes blended together nicely.

Black, white, and blush is such a classic combo. Really, a plain white tee in and of itself pairs pretty flawlessly with striped flats. I added in the blush for a little bit of an unexpected twist.

White peplum, olive military jacket, dark washed skinnies, black and white striped flats

This is basically the same logic as the previous outfit - that a white top will almost always balance striped flats pretty effortlessly. But instead of picking your basic white tee, I picked this lacy peplum to add some texture. From there, you can throw any color jacket over this since white goes with anything and everything (except maybe not ivory), and then I threw in the necklace as my color pop.

And that's it! Not super earth shattering, but hopefully still helpful. If you'd like to see a few other looks with striped flats, you can check out this post when I paired a chambray with olive shorts, this post when I paired a white button up with light washed skinnies (though I'm cringing at the dots, I'd lose the dots now), and this post when I paired a chambray popover with wine skinnies.

    1. Yes they are! Part of the reason why I never wear flats is because they rip up my feet. This is one of only three pairs of flats in my collection. They earned their spot because they're nice to look at and they don't hurt my feet at all.

  5. Love the monochromatic stripe on stripe outfit flatlay - that would be my favourite! :)

I always admire printed or patterned shoes but end up buying the boring neutrals - maybe this year I'll finally branch out, haha!
