Manic Monday: #remixfix2015 kickoff

Before I get into the guts of this post - can we just talk about this cardigan for a second? I stumbled upon it when I was trying to find stuff to spend my Christmas money on. It's the softest, coziest cardigan ever, and I love the asymmetric zip with the option to leave this open and perfectly drapey. The big, black exaggerated cuffs break up the monotony of the stripes, not that the stripes are bad, they're actually what drew me to touch it in the first place! I ended up sizing up only because I wanted to be able to layer it over more than just tank tops and camis. Anyway - it's my recommended buy of the week, how about that?

Sunnies: Tom Ford | Scarf: Express (option) | Zip Cardigan: Caslon | Bag: Lauren Ralph Lauren (other colors here) | Chambray: JCrew FactoryJeans: Express | Heels: Valentino

Everyone seems to be sharing their resolutions, whether it be blog related or personal. Everyone, that is, except for yours truly. The main reason why I haven't shared anything is because I feel like they are the same every year - save more, shop less, purge more, exercise more (or ever), yada yada. Well, rather than talk about my resolutions, I decided to just dive right in and start a project.

Jenna over at Sincerely Jenna Marie told me about this little project she was going to be doing - basically a capsule wardrobe, so to speak, over a 2 month period of time, except that her goal was to not make it as boring or predictable as some of these can turn out to be. By volunteering myself to join in on this fun - I'd be tackling two of my common resolutions of shopping less and saving more.

And on top of that, one of my most favorite things to do is come up with ideas on how to remix the same pieces into different looks - and I'm not talking about just changing your shoes and calling it a remix - I'm talking about truly creating different looks with the same pieces. If I like doing it so much, then why not actually DO it and document it all for you guys along the way?

Being sick last week kinda threw my schedule off a bit, so I'm starting the challenge as of today. So remember these pieces as you will be seeing them again over the next 2 months - I will end the challenge on March 15th.

Jenna and I would love to have more ladies join us!  Below I've outlined the rules that we're following.  If you want to join, start sharing your outfits on instagram with the hashtag #remixfix2015.  Jenna is also planning to host a special linkup at the end to give everyone an opportunity to share a recap post, or a few of their favorite looks from during the project.

The Rules
  • Set the number of items you will remix for the next 2 months, whether or not you include shoes/purses/accessories/jewelry in your count is up to you
  • At the end of January, you can swap out up to four items, in case you blew it picking a few dumb items
  • You're allowed ZERO purchases in January, the addition of ONE item in February, and ONE new item in March
  • Loungewear and gym clothes don't count toward the totals
  • If a special occasion arises (wedding, cocktail party, business professional event, etc…) you can wear anything in your closet
  • Rewards points/cash/etc can be used towards the allotted purchases, but otherwise must be saved for Spring!
Disclaimer:  I may feature some items from a few blog sponsors here and there, but do not plan on including these in my official remix item count.

For me, I've decided that I am not going to set a quantity limit. It was giving me anxiety trying to pick my pieces as if I were going on a 2-month trip! Instead, I will set my capsule based on what I will be wearing over the next 3 weeks (that's 12 outfits since I normally do my Random Roundup posts on Fridays). 12 outfits worth of pieces should no problem translate into 2 months of wear. I'm cataloging everything I will be wearing from now until then, and by the end of the third week, my list will be set. This will be a good exercise to document the must have pieces to get through the winter!

In all honesty - you really won't be noticing anything different on the blog - especially if I'm successful at remixing. But it will be fun to do a big recap at the end when you can see the remixed pieces side by side. I'll also provide updates along the way!

Manic Monday: Christmas part 1

The Christmas celebrations have officially begun over in these parts! We are headed to SoCal today to see my family, so we had an early Christmas with the husband's family this weekend. This outfit was from Saturday night when we celebrated with the extended fam - just a casual house party where the kids entertained us with song and dance. I certainly wanted to be comfortable for the marathon eating and drinking.

The necklace reads "Shake it off"

Necklaces: Gifted, The Foundrie, Express | Bag: Lauren Ralph Lauren (other colors here) | Tank: Express (option) | Sweater: Old NavySweater leggings: Express (still available in grey here, option) | Shoes: Sam Edelman (option)

Yesterday, we exchanged gifts with his immediate family. We met for breakfast, opened gifts, and then basically lounged around watching Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel. I may or may not have taken 3 naps during this process.

My in laws are very generous gift givers. They do ask us for our lists, which are always hard for me to put together because I always buy everything I want as I want them. (I'm just impatient like that.) This year, I decided to ask for a few pieces that would make my little corner of the living room where I blog more functional and complete.

Left: New side table and lamp | Right: New lap desk

I was using the smallest stool ever as a side table, which just ended up being all my necessities stacked on top of each other, as balanced as possible. I was looking for a legit side table with a drawer and space below to stack magazines. I already have a padded lap desk, but I wanted one that was more like a stand, so my laptop could sit up a little higher. And finally, I wanted a floor lamp because I feel like the other lights in the living room are too bright when all I'm doing is blogging.

Yes, we do have an office, but the majority of the year, I'm watching baseball while I'm blogging, and well, I am just more comfortable under a blanket and in my recliner vs. sitting upright at a desk. Not very extravagant, but I'm definitely enjoying my freshened up space!

Have a great week! If you have to work this week, I hope it's quiet and goes quickly!

Layers

Sunnies: Vince Camuto | Vest: Old Navy (optionoption) | Necklace: Kate Spade (option, optionbudget option)  | Sweater: Banana Republic (option, option) | Top: JCrew Factory (option) | Jeans: Express (option, option) | Booties: Hinge (option, option)

If there are two things blogging has encouraged me to try more, it's pattern mixing and layering. Layering in and of itself is such a great accessory. Even if you're just layering a handful of basics or neutrals, I love how it instantly gives your eye more to look at, inherently making the outfit more interesting. At least to me! Whenever I'm feeling uninspired, or when I'm looking at my full closet room feeling like I have nothing to wear, I start trying to come up with ways I can layer different pieces, and it gets my juices flowing! Bet you didn't know fashion was so deep!

The Resale Shop event

I mentioned in my Wednesday post that I was going to a blogger event after work. I had every intention of wearing that burgundy skirt, but it's been 12 days since we've seen sunlight, and it's hard in this cold, dreary weather not to wear anything but comfy distressed jeans. #thestruggleisreal

So, I used a similar color palette and brought the burgundy into my sweater to layer over that same striped portofino, then finished off the outfit with some pointy toed heels.

Sweater: DVF (optionnon sequin option) | Necklace: Express (option) | Top: Express (option) | Bottoms: American Eagle (option) | Heels: Sam Edelman (option, option)

Jill from Stilettos on Sunday Morning hosted the get together which consisted of shopping (for 25% off), snacks, wine, and mingling. It was great to see some familiar faces from St. Louis Fashion Week, but I did meet a couple of new-to-me bloggers as well! And yes, Jenna was available to attend also!

L to R: Laura, Psyche, Sarah, Jill, Jenna, Me (awkward), Carmen, Yasmin, Latoya

The event was held at a local thrift store aptly named, The Resale Shop. I had never been to the store before, and let's be real, I'm just not a thrifter by trade. I've always admired all you skilled and patient thrifters, but have never done much of it myself. The Resale Shop may have spoiled me for all other thrift stores, though - I'll get to their amazing selection in a bit. Everything for sale in the shop has been donated and each sale goes towards several programs supporting underserved women, children, and families in the community.

We wandered around the store soaking everything in for every bit of the two hours. Jenna was THISCLOSE to scoring a fully lined Burberry trench for $200, except sadly the sleeves were just a bit too short. She still tried it on twice though, just for good measure, and it otherwise looked amazing on her! My spidey senses kept drawing me to all things Kate Spade like this black dress. I probably should have at least tried it on, but that's ok because I did not leave empty handed.

If you follow me on Instagram, you already know how this story ends. I ended up finding… ok scratch that. *Jenna* found the most adorable tassel glitter Miu Miu loafers in my size. They were in their original box - absolutely no scratches on the soles, nor any creases or signs of wear in the footbed. $80, but I would get them for $60 because of the blogger happy hour discount. I almost immediately dismissed them because I really don't wear flats all too often. But, I'm always a fan of trying things on anyway because you just never know. And of course there were fireworks, rainbows, and unicorns the second they were on my feet. I'm going to skip ahead so I can share how I styled them yesterday:

Necklace: I'm thinking it's old Forever 21 (option) | Blazer: Olivia Moon (similar here) | Top: Express (in Royal Purple) | Bracelets: Gifted, Nadri, Express | Bottoms: ExpressShoes: Miu Miu (option, option, option, non glitter option)

And if that wasn't all good enough, there were also several door prizes - I ended up winning a generous $200 gift card to another local shop called The Clover, and Jenna won this box of fragrant goodness from K Hall Designs.

Not bad for a Wednesday night! I'll definitely make it a point to pop in there every now and then to see what other gems I can find. If you're in the area - be sure to check out The Resale Shop!

Manic Monday: Another vest

OK, first, I know what you're thinking. Before I go any further. Let me just address the elephant in the corner.

Yes, I'm wearing sunglasses and the street lights are on.

But! In my defense, it was only 4pm, so the lights had no business being on anyway! Ok, I feel better, let's carry on, shall we?

Sunnies: Tom FordVest: JCrewNecklace: Kate Spade (option) | Bag: Forever 21Sweater: Express (option, option, option) | Top: Rubbish (option, option) | Bracelet: NadriBottoms: Express (option, option, option) | Shoes: Joe's (50% off!)

I'm so obsessed with vests lately, I just can't even control myself - I want all of them!! I just love everything about this look. I thought it was perfect for a double date night. I had met the boyfriend we were eating with, but not his girlfriend.

It's always hard to figure out what to wear when you are dressing for strangers and have no idea what their style is. Do they even like shopping? Is it safe to talk about how I share my OOTD photos on Instagram?! You don't want to look like a basic b!tch, but then again, you kind of do because you don't want to look overdone.

So, I wanted to be easy breezy and casual with the boyfriend jeans, but still interesting with the layers, and still sassy with the heels and clutch. In the end, I felt completely appropriate, and relieved with my outfit selection. Yes, getting dressed is HARD.

Enter here!

The giveaway runs until midnight, so you still have a few hours to enter! We will be announcing the winner on Wednesday, so hopefully that's instant gratification for you! Good luck!!

Third Thursday Threads: Fall Footwear

I was so excited (and honored) when Bri asked if I would co-host Third Thursday Threads with her this month. This month's theme is "Fall Footwear." Well, if there's any theme that I can dress to - it's footwear related! I decided to pick these BCBG leopard pumps. I had originally seen them on Sabrina, and wouldn't you know, Cha Cha and Sheila are also now proud owners.

Sunnies: Vince Camuto | Scarf: JCrew Factory | Bag: MICHAEL Michael Kors (option) | Top: JCrew Factory | Jacket: ExpressBottoms: American Eagle (option) | Heels: BCBG

Leopard pumps are certainly not limited to Fall, they're pretty seasonless to me. However, because I love oxblood so much, which is inherently fall to me, I wanted to pick a shoe that I always turn to as a pairing with oxblood. Cue all things leopard!

I really love the simple pieces in this outfit - the silhouette is classic, there are no real big statement pieces, but everything about it makes me feel put together and complete. The scarf is also my new favorite purchase, as I've worn it about 3 times in the last week. How has this stripe addict never owned a striped scarf before?!

Be sure to hop on over to Bri's blog to check out her favorite fall footwear! And link up with us, too, while you're at it!
