Summer plaid popover 2 ways + my life hacks

I really tried to put a more interesting outfit together for you today, but it's been raining for what feels like an eternity, and I just could not bring myself to wear anything other than an easy popover, plus leggings, and my wellies. I figured I would compensate for the not-so-exciting outfit by sharing (and re-sharing) another way I've styled this top as well as some of my favorite life hacks. Random, I know, but let's get started!

Outfit details--- Sunnies: Ray Ban (similar) | Necklace: Kendra Scott "Milla" | Plaid popover: JCrew | Stripe tee: bp (option) | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff "Regan" | Leggings: ZellaRainboots: Hunter ---

I totally stole the idea of layering this plaid over a long sleeved stripe tee from J.Crew's stock photo. The top is very, very lightweight so even if I'm wearing it over a long sleeved tee, it still feels comfortable enough for spring weather. I will say that the striped tee is pretty thin also, and the temps were in the 60's thanks to the incessant rain. Regardless, I love plaids and stripes together, so it's a pretty foolproof combo.

Why these are my favorite rain boots

The thought of wearing anything but my rain boots made me cringe because I hate the feeling of wet feet. Absolutely one of the worst feelings ever! I have legit been living in these boots for the last few days. I have three pairs of rain boots now, this solid black pair being the most recent purchase of the three, and I definitely wear these the most. For some reason, my feet don't sweat as bad in these as my other two pairs which are both glossy. And as much as I adore my red wellies and my dotted wellies (hello old school awkward post!!), there's a time and a place for them, and the solid black are more universally outfit friendly. Also, the red pair require a lot of tender love and care. I have to shine them up every few wears, so just for the sake of time, grabbing this black pair without thought is way easier.

This outfit would work equally as well had I worn black, white, or traditional blue colored denim pants or shorts. The JCrew model is wearing shorts, and I loved that look so much that I created a flat lay of it here to remind me to wear it! I mainly chose leggings today since I was tucking them into boots, and let's be real, leggings are way less effort than jeans and this rain is sucking all effort out of me!!!

Original post here

As promised, here's a reminder of the last way I styled this top. Plaid shirts tied around my waist are one of my favorite accessories! But I do love the way it layers over this olive dress as well as in today's striped tee. Any piece that works well on its own or as a layer is worth spending money on! It will be great under a sweater or utility vest, too, come winter!

Life hack #1: Faux knot your top

how to knot a tee
See original post here
Buy clear elastics here or here

You'll notice that I knotted the plaid top in both outfits. That segues nicely into my first life hack that I wanted to remind you guys about! I'm a knot-tying addict. Sometimes a partial tuck just isn't enough, or it's so fussy and never stays put. But I never have enough material on my top to make a true knot, so I use the teeny clear elastics to fake a knot for me. Someone asked me if this stretches out the top, and my answer is no. I'm only gathering any excess fabric - I'm not overly pulling onto the material (because if I did, you'd see my back muffin top, and no one wants to see that!) It does leave wrinkles when you remove the elastic at the end of the day, but it's nothing my steamer can't remove in 2 seconds or less!

Life hack #2: Lash extensions

Volumizing lash extensions before and after
See first posts about this here and here

It's been awhile since I've talked about my lash extensions, so I thought it was time to bring it up again, especially for any new readers that previously missed the topic. This weekend, the photo on the left popped up as a Facebook memory and every time I see myself pre-extensions, I kindly freak out a bit. My lashes grow straight, perpendicular to my face. And since they are short and I have hooded lids, there really is nothing mascara can do to help my case. I've also tried false lash strips and they are so uncomfy and a lot of work!

I took the photo on the right this weekend for comparison. I got a fill about 2 weeks ago, and I'm wearing a baseball cap and lip gloss, but otherwise no makeup. My extensions definitely perk up my face right out of bed. I realize this is a big time and financial commitment. I get my lashes filled every 3 weeks at $60 per fill. Each appointment takes an hour. But, there are some time and cost savings to help offset the investment! I rarely wear eyeshadow, and only apply liner and mascara to my lower lashes every day. On top of that, they give me confidence, as superficial as that sounds. But it is the truth! My extensions look so full because my lash gal uses a volumizing technique so each extension is 2 smaller lashes instead of one thick lash. I told her she must never leave me!

Life hack #3: Wash, shave, moisturize, and go!

L'Occitane Cleansing and Softening Shower Oil

I stopped by the L'Occitane booth in the networking hall last week at the rewardStyle conference, and the rep totally reminded me about how this shower oil truly is a life hack! I was first turned onto it thanks to Noelle. It's a little bit pricey at $25 per bottle, BUT, when I use it, I not only use it as a body wash, I can go ahead and shave my legs with it and not worry about applying shaving cream as an intermediate step. On top of that, the oils soak into my skin so well that I can typically skip lotioning up my body outside of the shower! If my skin is suuuuper dry and cracked in the winter, that may not be the case, but for this time of year, I can definitely just wash and go. It is worth the try if you have never used this before! I was thrilled that L'Occitane gave me another full sized bottle to have as a backup once my current stock is depleted!!

And that's all I have for you today! Some of this may be old news to you guys, but hopefully the reminder is still helpful!! Thanks for reading!

Ruched tank dress + cognac sandals

Nordstrom Leith Ruched Body-Con Tank Dress
Sunnies: TOMS | Plaid top: JCrew gathered popover shirt in Vintage PlaidDress: Leith Ruched body-con tank dressEarrings: Kendra Scott "Danielle" (Color Bar creation with filigree in all rose gold) | Necklace: Kendra Scott "Lizzie" (other colors here) | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff "Bowery" (exact style in other colors here) (other blue satchel options here and budget option here) | Bracelet: Kendra Scott "Gavin" (option) | Shoes: Dolce Vita "Nolin"

Remember last week's post when I told you Rachelle made me shop? Well, I ordered this dress in addition to that gorgeous white lace midi dress. I'm such a fan of easy dresses like this for warmer months. They are great on their own and work well as a base layer, too! I was conflicted by the sizing because the reviews seemed a bit all over the place. I ended up ordering the pink color (which is no longer online) in a medium and this green version in a small. The green definitely fit much better. I'm not sure if I will return the other one yet because it may fit fine if I actually put it in the dryer for a little bit, but I was going to wait and see if I can swap sizes in store.

Floral sweater + white skinnies

JCrew "Tippi" Ornate floral sweater
Sunnies: TOMS | Earrings: Kendra Scott "Skylar" (other colors here and here) | Necklace: Kendra Scott "Phara" (gifted) | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff (option, budget option) | Top: JCrew "Tippi" Ornate floral sweater | Bottoms: Brand (budget options here and here) | Sandals: Sam Edleman (other colors here)

It's not only Friday, but it's the last day of March! I'm not sure if I'm excited or terrified that it's April tomorrow! But anyway, I digress! Last week, I wore one of my favorite sweaters of all time - this floral number I scored from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale a few years ago. Since it's long gone, I was trying to find other good options for floral sweaters that I could link to for my readers. Well, wouldn't you know, this very sweater popped up in my search and I decided I had to have it. It's funny how I blog because I shop but I also shop because I blog!

JCrew "Tippi" Ornate floral sweater

Rebecca Minkoff Lexi bucket bag

I love that it has a solid navy back, and just the front is this fun, vintage-feeling, floral print. It's labeled as a sweater, but it's super lightweight, and the fit is relaxed, but not baggy, which I appreciate! I originally styled it with my navy scallop hem skirt (see flat lay here), but the best part about a sweater like this is the ease of being able to throw it on with any color jeans and be good to go. Especially when you have fun lace-up sandals to finish off the look!

Speaking of these sandals, they were one of the pairs I snagged for Dillard's infamous New Year's Day sale and I'm so happy I did! Olive, suede, lace-up - they're really beautiful and the stack heel makes them extremely walkable. They do come in a handful of other colors, and some color/size combos are under $60 here! It makes me wonder if I need another pair....

Have a great weekend! We have a 90th birthday party to go to for his Grandfather, and then on Sunday evening we have our first Cardinals game of the season!!!! Needless to say, it will be a really good weekend!

Schoolgirl to sassy

Plaid and leopard outfit, faux leather skirt outfit
Sunnies: Ray Ban | Necklace: Express (option) | Bag: Express (current version here) | Top: JCrew | Skirt: ASTR (option here and here) | Booties: Vince Camuto "Kathleen"

Rachelle was kind enough to remind me that I have a couple of faux leather minis in my closet that need to be worn! They used to fit a bit snug, so I was excited to pull them out and be able to wear them and breathe at the same time. Breathing is always nice when you're in clothes, eh? She styled hers with a plain white tee and the most amazing booties. I decided to pull together some blogger cliche pieces and create a sweet + edgy look.

The perfect jeans

J.Crew Ruffle sleeve stripe tee, American Eagle jegging, Valentino Rockstud, Metal Bib Necklace
Sunnies: TOMS | Necklaces: JCrew Factory (option) layered over Purple Peridot (option) | Bag: RL Ralph Lauren | Top: JCrew | Bottoms: American Eagle | Shoes: Valentino

If you've been a long-time reader of my blog, you know that I'm a huge fan of American Eagle jeans. Express and American Eagle jeans have been my go to for years now. I've tried designer denim, but I always go back to my two old faithfuls. Last week American Eagle had a buy one get one 50% off sale on their denim, so I stocked up on 4 pairs. The sale was timely because the bulk of my jeans are a bit big on me now (read more about why here.)

White after Labor Day

J.Crew eyelet v-neck tee shirt, Express white jean legging, Madewell Marie sandal, Clare V foldover clutch
Sunnies: TOMS | Earrings: Kendra Scott "Addie"Necklace: Kendra Scott "Kiri" | Clutch: Clare V (animal print option here) | Top: JCrew | Bracelet: Kendra Scott "Candice"Bottoms: Express (option) | Booties: Madewell "Marie" (super similar option here)

When it comes to fashion, I definitely don't believe there are rules. I have never abided by the "no white after Labor Day" rule, for example. I'm not sure how I would be able to survive without my white skinnies year round! It's like plain white tees - they go with ALLTHETHINGS! I think as long as you have fit and proportion right, you can basically wear what makes you happy regardless of what others may say or do!

Hello Monday: Self inflicted

Earrings: Kate Spade | Scarf: Paperdolls Boutique (c/o) | Bag: Gucci (option) | Sweater: Gap | Top: Express (option) | Bottoms: Express | Boots: Frye

This is the first time I've had a chance to just sit and open my laptop since Thursday night. I'm not used to all of this social activity, but it's silly for me to write a pity party post since it's all self inflicted! Friday evening we went to see Amy Schumer and it's been all downhill since then. Four family Christmas-related events, two of which were hosted at our house. Plus Christmas shopping, then packing for my California trip this week. I swear Christmas has just got to be a thousand times more stressful when you have to travel on top of all the inherent craziness! I wore this outfit yesterday for a Santa breakfast, last minute shopping, and then Christmas dinner and gift exchange with the immediate family. I honestly didn't mean to wear this for dinner also, I wanted to dress up a bit, but I didn't have a choice because I quickly ran out of time!

Toronto: What I Wore

Last week, I recapped what I wore on my work trip to Providence and Boston, so I figured this week I would do the same for my Toronto trip I went on late last week. Packing for work trips is so hard for me. My struggles for this trip were: 1) I had never met anyone I was meeting, so I had no idea if they were casual or super dressy 2) I hate meeting new people wearing flat shoes, but I also knew I'd be doing a lot of walking so the shoes needed to be comfy. 3) The weather seemed to be cold, windy, and rainy. With that in mind, let's get started!

Another vest

This week is (inadvertently) all about bringing flat lays to life. I know the flat lay isn't for everyone, but I personally enjoy looking at them and creating them. I mainly look at them for outfit pairing inspiration as 9 times out of 10, I'm not going to have all of the exact pieces someone owns anyway, so the fit of pieces and seeing them on a person doesn't really matter so much to me. It's basically like pulling color and pattern inspiration from a mood board of sorts. Naturally, if I'm looking to buy an exact piece, then yes, of course, I do want the option of seeing it on a human, preferably someone with my same body type.

I love creating them for Instagram because you just can't beat the color and detail of the actual pieces - you would never be able to appreciate the awesomeness of these booties as much from a top down photo, and especially not from a full body mirror selfie. Flat lays also work well for outfit planning. I used to do this in Polyvore, but ironically, the flat lay is easier and less time consuming than Polyvore. Why? Because not all retailers  offer clean stock photos of their items so you're either spending your time perfectly trimming the human model out of the photos to fit your layout, or you're searching aimlessly for a similar item that does have a clean stock photo. Basically, creating flat lays with my own exact pieces in real life just gives me a ton of flexibility. Plus, once my photos are done, I can just file them in my  album on my phone full of outfits to wear!

I bought this jacket from Old Navy a couple weeks ago on my lunch break. Old Navy can be so hit and miss for me in terms of fit and quality, so when I find a well-made, well-fitting piece, I jump all over it. This jacket is adorable and I was pretty excited when I thought about the idea of layering it under one of my gazillion vests. Especially my newest acquisition - the olive (or moss green) vest!

Sunnies: TOMS | Jacket: Old NavyNecklace: Kendra Scott (gifted) | Vest: JCrew | Top: BP. | Ring: Kendra ScottJeans: American Eagle (option) | Booties: Sam Edelman (current style here)

You guys have no idea how excited I am that it is legit vest season! WOOO! I don't know what's gotten into me, but I bought my first vest last year and my collection has reproduced like rabbits! I knew I had to get this vest in green, I didn't even bother fighting it nor waiting until I changed my mind because I knew it was a helpless cause. So you shouldn't fight it either! Just get it and let's be twinsies! Otherwise #sorrynotsorry for wearing it on repeat this season! You've been warned!

Inspired by Tati

TatianaOriginal post HERE

Lately I've been getting more of my inspiration from Instagram instead of Pinterest, mainly just because I am more active on Instagram than Pinterest by a landslide. Sometimes when I can't sleep, I scroll through my Insta-crushes and take screen shots of outfits I need to re-create. This was one of those outfits. If you don't know Tatiana, you really should! Gina did an awesome coffee date post with her here if you need a CliffsNotes version of all of her awesome-ness.
Via my Instagram: Original post HERE

Are you the type of person that has to say, "I turned off the flat iron" out loud before you leave the house so you actually remember that you turned off the flat iron? Well, I "like" so many outfits on Instagram that sometimes even my screenshots can get lost in the shuffle. But if I do a flat lay of the outfit, it sticks on my brain a bit longer, and makes it easier for me to remember I must wear the combo! It's kind of like the flat iron example, no?

Sunnies: TOMS | Earrings: Forever 21 | Necklace: Kate Spade (shop other Kate Spade jewelry HERE) (budget option) | Bag: Chloe | Top: LOFT | Bracelet: JCrew | Bottoms: Current/Elliott (shop other options HERE and HERE) | Heels: BCBG (option here)

I finally got around to wearing it, and needless to say, I loved all of it. I feel like a broken record, but sometimes it's the simplest of combos that I always forget about. Red and navy are so classic together, yet I have no idea why I never would have picked these pieces together had I not seen the outfit on Tatiana. The leopard is such a great finishing touch. I remember when I used to shy away from navy, but I'm less scared of it nowadays, and see it as much more versatile than I used to. And navy looks amazing with leopard! Thanks, Tatiana, for such perfect inspiration all day every day!

PS You can also follow her on Snapchat (tatibonilla) - she has the cutest accent, you might fall in love with her more! I really enjoy hearing people's voices in snaps! Knowing how people sound really adds some new life to their 2-dimensional photos!

Speaking of people you should follow - please see Noelle's post here! She polled some fellow bloggers, including myself, to highlight some of our must-have pieces for fall!

Random roundup

Happy Friday!! I am in SoCal as I write this, and I'm torn between sleep and online shopping. There are just so many good sales right now, I don't know how to deal!! In case you missed my post yesterday, I recapped some of my wardrobe staples should you need shopping inspiration. You can also check out my SHOP tab up above for other pieces over which I am currently obsessing!

I take outfit selfies anytime I leave the house in something, true story. They end up accumulating on my phone quickly, and I decided months ago, that Fridays were the best time to share these random selfies with you so they properly make the blog. But, since they multiply like rabbits, I end up with a backlog of outfits. This bunch happens to be from around the Nordstrom Anniversary sale at the end of July. I tell you this because many, if not all of the items I purchased during the anniversary sale are back ON sale now! So, if there were pieces you coveted that you decided to pass on, the shopping gods are giving you a second chance. Don't blow it!

Let's get started!

Jacket: Express | Necklace: Target | Top: Halogen (half off!) | Watch: D&G (shop other white watches HERE) | Bottoms: Express (similar) | Shoes: Vince Camuto (great option here)

Bag: Rebecca MinkoffTop: JCrewNecklace: Kate Spade | Bottoms: Express | Shoes: Louise et Cie

Top: JCrew (on sale!) | Bag: LongchampShorts: JCrew Factory | Sandals: Steven by Steve Madden

Vest: JCrew Factory | Top: Express | Necklace: Tasha (half off!) | Bottoms: Current Elliott (40% off!) | Flats: Halogen (other colors here)

Top: Express | Necklace: MOD | Bottoms: Hue | Heels: Valentino

Lots of good stuff in this post! And now that I'm done with it, I think I may do a little online shopping before I go to sleep. Sorry not sorry. Express is having a 40% off sale right now, and thanks to this picture on Instagram, I won a $500 gift card. How freaking awesome is that?! Now to figure out what is worthy enough to spend this free money on……

Happy shopping and enjoy the long weekend! Please report back and let me know what you buy!

EDIT: Sooooo, just as I was going to hit "publish" on this post, I just realized I already posted 3 out of these 5 outfits in this recap post here. Lucky for me, they are relevant again since all this stuff is on sale, so we will just call it blogging fate verses a fashion blogger problem. Because it is almost midnight and I am not rewriting this post! Please still love me and pardon the accidental rerun!!

Greyed out

Sunnies: Tom Ford | Necklace: Kendra Scott (c/o) | Wallet: Chanel | Rings: BCBG, Topshop | Top: JCrew Factory (option) | Bracelet: Tiffany & Co. | Bottoms: American Eagle (option) | Heels: Kate Spade (option)

This necklace is everything, you guys. I am absolutely, one thousand percent in love with it. And what's funny is, when I put this outfit on, it was just meh before I added any jewelry. The top has a boyish fit, and when I paired it with black skinnies, it was a big snoozefest. Then I added this necklace and my eyes turned into hearts. A lightbulb turned on and I grabbed my silver heels. All of a sudden, I'm obsessed with this outfit.

Today is my Friday and I'm a bit stressed thinking about everything I have to do!!! The days leading up to a trip are always the most hectic. It will all end up being ok, but having to pack and all of that just wears me out! And I have to remember to get dog food. And pay bills. And somehow make it to the tailor. And paint my nails…. Who wants to help me?
