Black Friday-week shopping

I've been slowly buying things throughout this week because I feel like the sales start earlier and earlier every year. But, I've been trying to focus on a specific list of "needs." I was semi successful sticking to these needs...

Long time, no see

Well, hello there! No your eyes are not deceiving you. I'm actually writing a blog post right now. I can't promise you that it will be a normal Monday through Friday occurrence, or that I will ever even take proper blog photos again, but I do miss blogging, so I will do so when my heart desires.

Styling gold loafers

Gap boatneck stripe top, JCrew Factory utility vest, Naturalizer Veronica gold loafers
Sunnies: TOMS | Vest: JCrew Factory (option, option) | Earrings: Kendra Scott "Adela" (option) | Necklaces: Kendra Scott "Emelina" layered over Kendra Scott "Aiden" | Bag: Kate Spade (navy satchel options here, and budget option here) | Top: Gap (option here) | Ring: Kendra Scott "Naomi" (other colors here) | Bottoms: American Eagle | Shoes: Naturalizer "Veronica" (c/o) (also sold here)

You guys should know by now that me and Naturalizer go way back. My oldest pair of Naturalizer boots are almost 9 years old! You can see them in my first year of blogging here and more recently in an outfit here. My next oldest pair of Naturalizers are from their "Naya" line. I can't live without them. Other colors are still available here and you can see my exact pair most recently styled here. I know this fringe number will join the alumni ranks of its predecessors and remain a closet staple for years to come! The fact that they have the quality and style to last not only season after season but year after year should speak highly of the brand. Not to mention that their shoes are amazingly comfy.

If you missed out on those then, you're in luck because you can find them on Amazon in a plethora of sizes and colors here! But let's fast forward to the present, shall we?

Vest + off the shoulder

CS Gems off the shoulder floral top, JCrew Factory Utility vest, American Eagle Jegging, Naturalizer Fortunate bootie
--- Originally posted here ---

My love for all things cold shoulder and off the shoulder are real. I've already proven this to you guys here and here and here. My love for the utility vest is also real. I don't think I have enough room in this post to link to all of my utility vest outfits. I've been seeing vests (and overalls) paired with OTS tops, and I've been wanting to try this. I liked how the vest grounds an otherwise flowy off the shoulder top and basically turns it into a cold shoulder.

50% off Express + free shipping

If you saw yesterday's post, it was all about my shopping list for Black Fridayweek and what I had my eye on. If you noticed, there were no Express items on that list! That's because Gina summarized my wish list items in her post HERE. I honestly wasn't planning on posting anything else until after my Black Fridayweek purchases were complete, but then Jenna said she was waiting to see some outfit collages from me of all the things she needed from Express! I figured she may not be the only one with this request, so here is YOUR shopping list post! For the sake of time, I am only linking to those items I know are available and on sale, so if there is something I have not linked to that you'd like to know more about - please let me know, and I'm happy to dish the product info!

These distressed jeans are my absolute favorite!
Other items pictured on sale: Black lace top ($10!) | Clare V Clutch | Rebecca Minkoff satchel | Camo sweater

The #RemixFix2015 recap

I was originally going to post the recap this past Friday, but since I debuted the challenge on a Manic Monday, I felt it only fitting to also end it on a Manic Monday. I apologize in advance for this being photo heavy. It's been two months of outfits, so no matter how I decided to organize this for you guys, I know it's going to be a visually long post!

The Capsule: Original post HERE

First, let's start with my capsule. You can go back and read all the details about it HERE but the short story is that I ended up with 48 pieces of clothing/shoes and 23 pieces of bags/other accessories. That yielded 48 outfits that I ended up wearing in real life, though I had about 15 more outfit combinations that I planned out, but just never got around to wearing. For example - I only wore my poncho once!!

The outfits: 48 outfits from January 12th through March 12th

If I learned anything from this challenge, it's that capsule wardrobes are not for me. First, I have way too many things in my closet to segregate pieces for a couple of months. It kind of pains me that I ignored some of my most favorite pieces during this challenge. But, it did push my limits for remixing and I'm comfortable that I will have no problem surviving on a trip by simply remixing a small amount of pieces vs. overpacking.

I also feel like dressing up is my creative outlet, and when I'm limited to a certain amount of things, I feel like that creativity gets suffocated and I start to feel unmotivated as a result. Yes, I realize how superficial that sounds - wah wah wah, I can't wear what I want! But it's true, and I know that I've been extra cranky weeding my way through this. I feel sorry for Gina for listening to my rants!

But, what is gratifying about all of this is seeing the amount of outfits I was able to come up with. And while each look is a little bit different, I always love seeing how I style the same pieces different ways. I took a look at all my outfits to see trends in which pieces I styled the most and grouped them together for you below.

Basic black blazer: 6 ways

Graphic tee: 3 ways

Checkered vest: 5 ways

Striped zip cardigan: 3 ways

Maroon, long sleeved striped tee: 4 ways

Denim jacket: 4 ways

Camel sweater: 4 ways

Breton stripe sweater: 6 ways

Olive military jacket: 5 ways

Olive cargo skinnies: 4 ways

Leopard pumps: 6 ways

And there you have it! I will probably never ever ever do a capsule again unless it's due to force majeure! But I don't regret doing this. I've honestly been wanting to do this just to see if I could get through it, so I'm glad that I at least *know* it's possible to live it in real life and not just out of a suitcase. I hope you guys enjoyed riding along with me, though, if I were truly successful, I would have made you forget along the way that I'd been living out of a capsule! Thanks for all of the sweet comments and words of encouragement you all gave me during this journey!

Random roundup

Well, hello there, and welcome to another edition of Random Roundup! As you read this, I will be en route to Denver, so I hope to have pretty pictures of my trip to share with you next week. For now, here are some outfit selfies that I have accumulated! I will only be linking to the items that are still available!

Jacket: J Crew Factory | Earrings: Nickel and Suede Necklace: The Foundrie | Buffalo plaid top: Express | Tee: That Mom Chic | Bracelets: Nadri | Leggings: Express | Shoes: Ash

When I posted this outfit on Instagram, I made a reference to Jordan Catalano because I totally felt like this is a 90's inspired outfit! I can't remember where I was - I think at one of the malls in California over Christmas break, and a girl walked by me in leggings, a denim jacket, and a plaid shirt tied around her waist. I thought about how I've always loved how effortlessly casual the outfit looked, but I cannot remember the last time I tied anything other than a belt around my waist! Running errands one weekend, I figured I would try it, and 90's or not, I still loved it.

Left: Original PostRight: Original Post

I've worn this tee three times already during this #RemixFix2015 challenge, so I thought it would be nice to showcase these looks side by side by side. The fit is really great on the tee - I love that it still looks seamless under the cardigan even though the cardigan isn't a chunky knit. A good graphic tee is certainly a wardrobe staple!

Necklace: CS Gems (c/o) | Earrings: Stella and Dot Cardigan: Caslon | Top: BPBottoms: ExpressBoots: Vince Camuto

I'm sorry to taunt you with this cardigan. I wish that it were still available because it's pretty amazing, as you can see. And I had purposely picked it for my capsule hoping that it would be available for the duration of the challenge. But alas, it's gone. You can see how else I've worn it below!

Left: Original Post | Middle: Original Post

I need to wear it with my white skinnies and cognac boots next! Or with a vest layered over it! Or even my army green jacket over it! See! Such a great piece. The possibilities are endless.

Earrings: Stella and Dot | Necklace: CS Gems (c/o) | Bag: Rebecca Minkoff | Vest: J Crew | Sweater: Target | Top: Gap | Bottoms: Express  | Boots: Naturalizer

The day I wore this outfit, I had a two hour meeting in a conference room where the thermostat literally read 80 degrees. Oh my gosh, I was dying. I took the vest off, but the sweater over the long sleeve FLANNEL was still so hot! In 80 degrees!! We kept trying to open the door to let some cooler air in, but it was right off the lobby and very noisy, so we couldn't keep it open for more than 5 minutes at a time. Thank goodness my hair was in a top knot, because I would have probably passed out!!

Necklace: Express | Vest: JCrew | Bag: 3.1 Phillip LimTop: JCrew FactoryBottoms: ExpressBooties: Nine West

This outfit is just a little famous. I posted a flat lay of it on Instagram (with different booties), and it ended up getting regrammed by a mega account here. One of the first comments was that it is the ultimate man outfit, and I was thinking - oh my goodness, do they really think this is meant for a man?! Certainly not with my necklace and bracelets, right?! But, you know, it really could pass for a man's outfit, so I guess I can't blame them either way! I cheated a little with my capsule and chose these leopard booties over my cognac booties, because, well, LEOPARD.

I feel like leopard and buffalo plaid are pretty overdone on Instagram, but I don't care because I still love it. But it's funny because I wore this to the mall (hence the dressing room selfie), and I got a couple of compliments from people telling me how they loved how I paired leopard with the plaid. I will certainly take that compliment, but at the same time, I know it's not a Carylee original since it is EVERYWHERE on Instagram. But it just goes to show you that no matter how massive the Instagram network feels sometimes, it's really just a drop in the bucket compared to real life population!

And on that prophetic observation - I shall bid you ado! Ahem. I meant, adieu. :)

There's still time to enter the ultimate cash giveaway HERE!

Hello my name is

Caryl. My name is Caryl.

A couple weeks ago, I mentioned in this post that I was debating whether I wanted to write about more than just my outfits or shopping. Whether anyone even cared if I wrote about more substance. I received a lot of sweet comments about readers wanting more, so I figured I may as well start with my name. :)

Which is really just like Carol, just with a Y instead of an O. Easy enough, right? Except all my life, it has been incessantly mispronounced. I'm certain that people see the Y and immediately freak out and want to make it more complicated than it is. I get called Carly, Cheryl, Carolyn, Karen. But what I get called the most, hands down, is Carl. So. When I started this blog, I wanted people to at least think of me with a girl's name! I found that when I slur my first and my middle name (Lee) together, that people tend to get it right more often. Or, if anything, people think my name is Cary Lee, but seriously, Cary is still way better than Carl.

Isn't it funny though how you can read blogs on the daily, and you start to get to know the blogger, but in a way that you've created them in your head? Not really created, but more so, filled in the blanks to the unknowns that you aren't privy to in real life. Just like characters in a book. I think that's why movie adaptations to books can be somewhat  disappointing - because it's totally different than the images you have in your head.

When I first met Jenna in person, we somehow went our whole first date without having to say each other's names. On our second date, we made a stop at Starbucks. The cashier asked for my name and I said, "Caryl." Jenna immediately paused and said, "What did you say your name was?" I said, "Caryl." And she said, "But that's not your real name, right?" Haha! She had been mentally calling me Karlie (I'm just phonetically spelling it) in her head for, I don't know, the whole year we had known each other online? A couple times during our date, she slipped and called me Karlie again. I don't blame her though! It's hard to shake that habit! Until a few months ago, I was calling Rachelle from Pinksole, Rachel! Why? I dunno!  It's so obvious with the spelling. And to this day, I still slip! Ruh-shelllll. Ruh-shelllll. It will stick once I get to meet her in person!!! (It will happen.)

Sunnies: Vince Camuto (option) | Earrings: Express | Necklace: Vince Camuto (option) | Jacket: Express (option, option) | Dress: Old Navy (option, option) | Top: JCrew Factory | Bracelets: H&M (gifted) | Belt: Express (option) | Boots: Naturalizer (c/o)

And if you call me Carylee in real life or in emails, I certainly won't mind ever - I did actually give myself this name. And to be honest, my mom still calls me Caryl Lee more than she does just my first name by itself anyway, so I'm used to it!

Ok - so let's talk about this outfit. I told you I wasn't done with my capsule yet! I've been wanting to remix this dress for a couple weeks now, so here you go! If you can layer anything over or under a dress, well, that just makes me love the dress even more! And since this one is ponte knit, it is structured enough to still look seamless over a bottom layer, but still enough stretch so I'm not feeling constricted! I could have made this a little more dressy with my black blazer and black booties, but once I added the leopard belt, I immediately grabbed for green and cognac!

Hope you had a great weekend! Now it's time to linkup! But first, if you missed it, I've got yet another giveaway for you. It's a cash giveaway, and you can enter HERE!

Random roundup

Happy Valentine's Day eve! How is it that time already?! Pretty crazy, but I am not complaining about the weekend. We are headed to Big Cedar Lodge today, but I'm of course leaving you with my random roundup for the week before I go! Enjoy!

Earrings: Stella and DotNecklace: Vince Camuto | Top: JCrew Factory | Bracelets: H&M (gifted)Bottoms: Express | Boots: C/O Naturalizer

I was talking about all things simple yesterday, and this outfit goes right along with that. No layers, no pattern mixing, just a top and bottoms and a splash of bling. I really do forget that at the end of the day, it's truly the fit that matters. Nicely fitting pieces, even just basics, will never be boring or go out of style.

Top: BP | Scarf: Express | Bottoms: Express | Boots: Frye

Another rule of mine is anything + a scarf always equals fun. Especially my favorite print scarf with a pop of color like this one. This stripe top and the gingham shirt above are two of my most reached for layering pieces. It's nice to be able to let them shine on their own in these two outfits.

Necklace: Stella and DotBlazer: ExpressTop: Gap | Bottoms: Express | Boots: Cole Haan (option)

I work in a pretty casual office - hence why I can get away with wearing these jeans to work. My boss was teasing one of my coworkers for wearing a sports coat plus jeans because he thought he was too overdressed. So one day last week, my boss got a big handful of us to show up wearing blazers and jeans, which completely had the coworker  both confused  and amused as he realized what everyone was wearing!

And speaking of blazers, I'm really glad I added this one to my capsule because it's the gift that keeps on giving. I have another black blazer in my closet, but it's more of a cropped length. This one hits perfectly at my hip and instantly adds structure to the most casual of outfits. I really need more blazers like this in my life!

And if you have not entered The Mint Julep Boutique giveaway yet, here's the Rafflecopter for your convenience! Good luck!

#RemixFix2015: The Capsule

Before I jump into this, let me just recap some of the history for those of you who are just tuning in. I explained the whole concept behind #RemixFix2015 here. Jenna did an amazing job picking her items AHEAD OF TIME, as I should have done, but had way too much anxiety to do so. You can see her capsule here. I took a little bit of an easier way out and picked my pieces over the last three weeks. I gave myself until the end of January to lock in my capsule, so now that the vault is sealed, I can share everything with you!

Note that the majority of these stock photos are NOT my exact pieces because the actual stock photos were either unavailable or had models wearing them. I've indicated the brand/designer of my exact piece below each collage. I am also only linking to pieces that are still available.

It was extremely helpful to build each of these polyvores as I wore the pieces. As I was getting farther along, I could start to see where I had gaps and missing pieces. For the sake of quantifying everything, here is everything in list form:

8 sweaters: 1 poncho, 3 cardigans, 4 pullover sweaters
10 tops: 3 long sleeve tunics, 4 print button ups, 1 solid colored button up, 1 chambray, 1 graphic tee
5 jackets: 1 wool coat, 1 anorak jacket, 1 denim jacket, 1 moto jacket, 1 blazer
3 vests: 1 plaid, 1 herringbone, 1 solid
8 bottoms: 4 pairs of jeans (dark, light, black, white), 2 pairs leggings (scuba, sweater), 1 wine colored skinnies, 1 utility cargo
4 dresses/skirts: 1 tank dress, 1 sleeved dress, 1 boucle mini, 1 black mini
10 pairs of shoes: 1 over the knee boot, 2 riding boots, 1 knee high heeled boot, 2 pairs heeled booties, 1 flat pair booties, 2 pairs pumps, 1 pair sneakers
48 total clothing/shoes

6 bags: 2 solid crossbody, 1 animal print, 3 large tote/satchel
4 scarves: floral, leopard, knit, blanket scarf
9 pieces of jewelry: 4 bracelets, 5 necklaces
1 belt
3 pairs of sunnies
23 total accessories

This sounds like a lot of items, but when you compare it to the bedroom sized closet full of clothes, shoes, and accessories that I own, well, this is just a drop in the pan. I could definitely pare this down a bit, but I was interested to see how many pieces I would end up with for me to feel comfortable with my capsule.

And these are the initial 16 outfits that locked in all the pieces of my capsule. I was originally shooting for 12 outfits to create 2 months of outfits, but as I was nearing those 12, I knew it wasn't going to be enough and I still had gaps to fill.

Whew. Thanks for those of you that stayed to the bitter end of this post. Though it won't take you near as long to read it as it took for me to put together. I showed you my capsule sorted individually by categories, in list form, and via the original outfits. Not sure how many other ways I can summarize this! At any rate - here it is, locked and loaded! Let the remixing begin in full force! I am kind of excited to see how many different outfits I can create from all this! And hopefully, by the time this is over, spring will be here and we can talk about something new! :)
